With Minnesota’s unemployment rate now at 7.5 percent, Shar Knutson, president of the Minnesota AFL-CIO, called on Minnesota’s Congressional Delegation and the state Legislature to create an aggressive new jobs program announced in Washington by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

“Working Minnesotans know,” Knutson said, “that a jobless recovery is no recovery at all. We need a coordinated national and state approach to putting people back to work.  An average of six workers are competing for every open job nation-wide,” Knutson said, “but in Minnesota the situation is worse, with eight unemployed people competing for every job opening.”  See link for full news release.

Today at the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka and other leaders joined together to call for urgent action to create jobs and rebuild the economy. In a live webcast panel discussion, the consensus was clear: Without quick action, an entire generation could be mired in economic turmoil. The nation can, and must, put people back to work—while addressing critical needs for the future of our communities. Read More>>

AFGE/Transportation Security Officers...
Errol Southers has been chosen to head the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and is waiting to receive confirmation from the full U.S. Senate. The AFGE union (American Federation of Government Employees) has represented Transportation Security Officers (TSO) in grievances around discipline and safety concerns since the agency’s inception. When the TSA was formed in 2002, President Bush’s administration codified language denying workers the right to collective bargain for wages and working conditions. Southers has promised to overturn those limitations, and AFGE is working with TSOs around the country to organize the entire workforce and hit the ground running when full bargaining powers are finally achieved.
